My wife likes to cross-stitch as a hobby, and I like to play music on synthesizers. She wanted to make a Father's Day present that brings our hobbies together, which I thought was very thoughtful, but she had trouble finding any good patterns online. There aren't very many at all, and the ones that are floating around are for-pay on Etsy, which I think is bullshit. I get that making cross-stitch patterns takes a little bit of time and effort, and some people want to monetize anything they produce, but I'm very much against that mentality. On top of that, the ones on Etsy are pretty crummy approximations of the synths I'm familiar with, and I thought I could do better.
So, with that in mind, if you want to cross-stitch a synthesizer, don't pay money for a vague hand-wave at a synth, print out these anatomically correct (down to the number of keys and patch points) patterns for free!
Here are patterns for Moog's Grandmother and Matriarch semi-modular synthesizers (I personally have the 'Dark' models of these, but the standard, color-block versions are more iconic and make for a more visually interesting pattern):
You'll notice I have included a garish "high-contrast" version of the patterns, since it's hard to see the black grid lines against the almost-black background on the true-color ones. The Grandmother is okay on a standard 8.5x11 sheet of paper, but you'll probably want to print the matriarch on 11x17.
If you decide to make one of these, I'd love to see a pic of the finished product, and if you enjoy my work, go out and make something cool and give it away for free.
